Northeast

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, December 24, 2006

The Northeast accounted for 19% of the country's 2006 total furniture and bedding sales. The region's sales totaled $16.4 billion and, by 2011, sales are projected to reach an estimated $20.3 billion, a gain of 23%, the slowest of any region.

Only 10 of the 150 major metropolitan areas in the United States that are predicted to grow faster than the national average of 27% are in the Northeast. They are Dover, Del., with projected growth of 34%; Atlantic City, N.J., with growth of 31%; Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middleton, N.Y., and York-Hanover, Penn., with increases of 30% each; Ithaca, N.Y., and Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton, Penn.-N.J., with growth of 29%; and, Vineland-Millville-Bridgeton, N.J., and Reading, State College and Lebanon, Penn., each with expected growth of 28%.

Three of the country's largest 10 markets are located in the Northeast — New York, Philadelphia and Boston. New York is a $5 billion-plus market, the nation's largest, and Philadelphia and Boston are each in the $1 billion-plus category.

While each is expected to keep its Top 10 ranking over the next five years, all three are expected to increase their furniture and bedding sales more slowly than the nation as a whole. New York's furniture and bedding sales are projected to increase 23%, while Boston and Philadelphia are expected to grow 24% and 20% respectively.

Delaware, one of the region's smallest states, is predicted to be its fastest-growing in terms of furniture and bedding sales. Delaware's furniture and bedding sales are projected to increase 30% by 2011.

Small metro areas, those with a core area population between 10,000 and 50,000, projected to grow the fastest over the next five years are East Stroudsburg, Penn., with an estimated furniture and bedding sales increase of 39%; Seaford, Del., at 34%; and Gettysburg, Penn., with expected growth of 32%.
