Harden to repair fire-damaged showroom
High Point space should be ready by market
Susan M. Andrews -- Furniture Today, January 25, 2007
HIGH POINT — A fire at Harden Furniture’s 200 N. Hamilton St. showroom here caused significant damage but the company plans to reopen in time for the spring furniture market.
“There was a fair amount of damage but the High Point Fire Department did a remarkably good job of responding and controlling it,” said Greg Harden, president and CEO of the high-end producer. “We plan to start reconstruction on Monday (Jan. 29) and we’ll be ready for the High Point spring market in March. We’re glad it happened when no one was in the building.
“The smoke damage,” Harden said, “was so pervasive that all the upholstery and carpet are beyond salvaging. They are all destroyed and will have to be replaced.”
He said the High Point fire marshal had hasn’t determined a cause, but company officials think it probably was related to the electrical system.
“The showroom windows didn’t break and the fire marshal said that helped control the damage. If they’d broken, the ventilation would have fed the fire and the whole building could have burned,” he said.
Denita Lynch, a spokesperson for the High Point Fire Department, said an alarm was triggered by smoke detectors on the second floor of the building, which is owned by Hamilton Properties. Trucks were dispatched at 11:40 p.m. Monday and arrived two minutes later.
The showroom is open year-round by appointment and had planned to participate in the High Point Design Center event that opened on Tuesday. “Obviously, we didn’t have the benefit of that event,” Harden added.
