Mattress Discounters buys N.H. sleep shops

David Perry -- Furniture Today, February 5, 2007

Growth-minded Mattress Discounters is expanding its presence in New England with the acquisition of Mattress World, a five-unit retailer in New Hampshire.

And more moves are in the works this year, according to Steve Newton, CEO of Mattress Discounters, which operates more than 130 sleep shops and is based here.

"Expansion will continue to be a top priority for us in 2007," Newton said. "We are focusing our efforts on aggressive new store development in our core markets. We will continue to place a special emphasis, as we did in 2006, in the New England region."

Mattress Discounters had 47 stores in New England before its latest acquisition.

The Mattress World stores, in Concord, Seabrook, Rochester, Portsmouth and West Lebanon, average 5,000 square feet. Mattress Discounters officials described Mattress World as the leading mattress retailer in New Hampshire.

Last year, Mattress Discounters increased its sleep center count by 20% through the opening of 23 stores, reinforcing its position as the largest sleep shop chain in the New England region, officials said.

The company is bolstering its efforts in the region with a new, larger warehouse in Foxboro, Mass., that will serve as a distribution center and will house the company's New England offices. Colin Harley, vice president of real estate, said the move into the larger warehouse "coincides nicely with this transaction, and will allow us to service the additional volume we expect from these stores."

Mattress Discounters, a Top 20 bedding retailer, sells Sealy Posturepedic, Stearns & Foster, Simmons Beautyrest, Beautyrest Black and Tempur-Pedic, as well as its own private-label line, Factory Direct Comfort Source. The company also carries a wide range of bedding accessories, including mattress pads, pillows, ornamental bedding, bunk beds and futons.

In addition to its New England stores, the company also operates in the Mid-Atlantic states.
