Sealy forms Orthopedic Advisory Board

Archdale, N.C. — Bedding major Sealy has established an Orthopedic Advisory Board of top orthopedic surgeons and clinicians.
The group will focus on developments and innovations that will help contribute to consumers' orthopedic health and provide more restful, recuperative sleep, the company said.
Sealy said its flagship Posturepedic has been associated with orthopedic health since the brand was introduced in the 1950s. Posturepedic was developed in conjunction with orthopedic surgeons, including Dr. Robert G. Addison, an honorary member of the Orthopedic Advisory Board.
"When we first discussed the idea of providing orthopedically correct back support for people experiencing back pain, we knew we were really on to something," said Addison, a longtime professor in Northwestern University's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. "This led to a discussion of transferring the mechanical principles applied to back support to mattresses, which resulted in the design of Sealy's first Posturepedic mattress."
"The Orthopedic Advisory Board will help us develop advanced methodologies, clinical studies and tools that demonstrate and evaluate orthopedically correct support," said Dr. Alan Letton, Sealy's vice president of research and technology innovation. "We will work together to ensure the science of sleep evolves with the needs of consumers' overall health and orthopedic wellness."
The board will work with Sealy management to develop advancements that offer "orthopedically correct" support and contribute to overall orthopedic health; understand the nature of sleep and sleep problems, design products that meet consumers' evolving needs; and direct and oversee academic sleep studies and research.
Philip Dobbs, senior vice president of Sealy Marketing, said, "The formation of the Orthopedic Advisory Board underscores Sealy's commitment to its orthopedic heritage, reinforces the brand promise of Sealy Posturepedic and supports our retail partners."
Members of the board, in addition to Addison, include Dr. William E. Garrett Jr., a professor of orthopedic surgery and team physician for Duke University Medical Center. He also is president of the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine and director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
