Dining draws strong buyer interest
By Jeff Linville -- Furniture Today, February 4, 2007
Las Vegas — Heavy traffic translated into strong interest in dining programs here. Exhibitors said they were pleased with attendance and buyer reception of their goods.
At HomElegance, traffic was way up over last July and "significantly up" over January 2006, said Jamie Collins, vice president of sales and marketing, adding buyers placed orders, more so than in High Point.
Emerald Home Furnishings made a big splash in dining with its move to Building B. President David Beckmann said casual and formal dining both did well. Among the groups getting attention was Metropolitan in a medium cherry finish.
Progressive saw more designers than in High Point, "and designers are our bread and butter," said President Dennis Ammons.
GS Furniture said dining sales were boosted by new product in other categories. English Rowan was a popular introduction two markets ago, so GS added bedroom and a modular home office wall, said Dana Steele, general manager. The new categories were well received and led to increased interest in ordering mixed containers, she said.
Hamilton & Spill was pleasantly surprised when four big customers stopped by on Sunday, giving "significant business" to jump-start the market, said Gary Harmon, senior vice president of sales and marketing. Traffic was good through the week, from across the nation and from foreign countries, he said.
At Bermex, U.S. National Sales Manager Albin Grundner said this market may have pulled traffic from the January Toronto show, adding its Building B space stayed busy.
Zocalo Marketing Manager Danny Olivas said the company's open space here allowed it to display vignettes in a way that retailers might replicate on their floors.
SLF showed 55 new bedroom and dining pieces, with its Bradford dining group among those getting good response.
