Occasional offerings abound

Las Vegas — Buyers seeking function and style had plenty to choose from at occasional and accent furniture vendors showing here last week. Thanks to larger showrooms and first-time exhibitors, there was more product to see, and that helped spur heavy showroom traffic.
For some vendors, functionality was a key part of the marketing pitch. For others, it was style.
At Martin Furniture, one of the best performers was a new lift-top table in the Jefferson Heights collection retailing at $399. Functional cocktail and end tables also were on display at Lane, Magnussen Home, Peters-Revington and Universal, to name a few.
At Universal, buyers got a sneak preview of the Better Homes & Gardens licensed collection to debut at the March High Point Market. It includes a dual lift-top table and an end table with a pullout tray.
At Magnussen, buyers responded to a Mission style lift top plus several new and existing upholstered cocktail tables. Some have storage elements and accompanying functional pieces such as upholstered seats that fit under the table surface.
At Peters-Revington, buyers responded well to the Aspen collection, launched in October, and also the Adirondack collection, new this market.
Powell drew strong response to its Masterpiece line of hand-painted accent furniture and its Michael Payne Finishing Touches line of accents. Buyers tended to place larger orders on such items, said Tom Liddell, senior vice president of national sales.
Emerald Home Furnishings' occasional tables included a new group of Asian-inspired three-pack combos retailing for $399. Buyers liked the storage element plus the red-and-black crackle finishes. Emerald also did well with a group of round cocktail and end tables with a hand-hewn, heavily distressed surface.
New occasional tables at Broyhill also are designed for use in a great room, with styles that tie in with both upholstery and casual dining. Its bestseller in the category here was Vantana, an artisan style group with $249 cocktails that feature metal grills under inset glass..
Another successful Broyhill group with a correlation between upholstery, home entertainment and casual dining is the California casual McKenzie Place, with cocktails also retailing at $249.
"Occasional is feeding in to how the customer is dressing up the home," said Brenda Dillon, merchandise manager for occasional, home entertainment and home office.
California Home showed a line of imported and domestically produced game tables, suitable for use in a great room alongside its home entertainment walls. Among its most popular was a 72-inch reversible top game table available in 35 finishes and retailing at $9,000.
