Scoperta at least 25% bigger

By Susan M. Andrews -- Furniture Today, February 11, 2007

Scoperta, the fabric show set here May 8–11, will be at least 25% bigger than the 2006 edition, according to Trade Link, the producer of the annual event.

But the show will remain separate from the Proposte show, held concurrently in Cernobbio, Italy (see story below left).

Scoperta, now in its ninth year, was moved in 2006 to Fiera Milano here from its previous location in Switzerland, just over the border near Cernobbio. The popularity of the new location led to rumors that the show would merge with Proposte, but Scoperta Managing Director Bill Davis said that's incorrect.

"Any rumors surrounding Scoperta and Proposte merging or even Scoperta buying Proposte, simply are not true and I have no idea where they have originated," Davis said.

He said Scoperta managers "would like to work more closely with Proposte," and said the shows together offer a "unique opportunity" in the textile industry.

"The one clear thing from the industry-wide research we recently commissioned is that buyers' time when visiting any exhibition is becoming less and if I was to send a message out to anyone it would be to those companies who take villas or rooms in hotels around Cernobbio," Davis said.

"In responding to the research, 70% of buyers revealed they did not visit any of these companies, but only wished they had the time to see them."

He said features at Scoperta will highlight trends and opportunities in the industry:

  • Made in Europe is a new certification program confirming that products are completely manufactured within Europe.

  • Creativa is an avant-garde program of seminars, demonstrations and exhibits that debuted last year.

  • Directors' Club offers year-round benefits for buyers at Trade Link events, such as networking opportunities with new and existing suppliers.

  • Feature Wall is an exhibit highlighting the revival of interest in European wall coverings.

Transportation links between Scoperta and Proposte will be improved for the next show, Davis said. He said the shows are 30 minutes apart.

At least 150 companies are expected to show at Scoperta, with about 90% from Europe, and representation also from Turkey and India.

So far, no Chinese companies are on the exhibitor list, Davis said.

"We look at every entry on an individual basis and even though we had and have a number of Chinese companies who want to participate, as yet none have come up to the high standards we expect," he said.
