Havertys January sales down 3%

Atlanta — Havertys said its January sales were down 3% from the comparable month last year to $64.9 million as same-store sales fell 4.4%.
"Our January started very slowly, with weak business for the New Year's holiday in many of the markets we serve," said President and CEO Clarence Smith. "We experienced a gradual increase in momentum throughout January, with total written sales off by about 6% for the full month.
"The general trend for retail home furnishings remains sluggish," he added. "We have continued to maintain our pricing integrity and are focusing on adjusting our operating costs to meet the current business conditions."
The Atlanta-based retailer has 120 stores in 17 states in the South and Midwest.
