Canadians honor Owen
Michael J. Knell -- Furniture Today, February 11, 2007
Toronto — Canadian bedding industry veteran Hugh Owen received the Ontario Furniture Manufacturers Assn.'s 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award during the winter market here in recognition of his contributions to the industry and community.
"Through his vision and leadership, Hugh has established and developed the Kingsdown brand as a significant bedding resource," said Laine Reynolds, OFMA chairman, in presenting the award. "Hugh also has been a very generous supporter of the industry at large ... and he is a great mentor to the next generation in our industry."
At 14, Owen took a part-time job at Swartz Furniture, a store in Peterborough, Ontario. Shortly after completing high school, he took a full-time job as sales agent for what was then Queen City Bedding in Toronto, the Canadian licensee for Restonic.
He later bought and sold another bedding company, returning to Queen City Bedding as national sales manager, then became a partner in the now-defunct Beverly Bedding. He again returned to Queen City as vice president of sales and marketing, a post he held until 12 years ago when he founded Owen & Co. The latter became the Kingsdown licensee for Canada and today operates factories in Vaughan, Ontario, and Calgary, Alberta.
Owen was OFMA president from 2002 to 2004 and chairman from 2004 to 2005.
