Workers at La-Z-Boy Tenn. Facility withdraw petition for vote on union

Move follows NLRB hearing; union doesn’t comment on reason

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, February 15, 2007

DAYTON, Tenn. — Workers at La-Z-Boy plants here have withdrawn their petition for a vote on forming a union.

Chip Harrell of the National Labor Relations Board said the employees who had sought a union election had informed the agency they were pulling the petition.

Carmela Cruse, an organizer for International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 175, confirmed the action. She said she would “rather not comment” on the reasons for the withdrawal.

The move follows an NLRB hearing this week, after which the company and the union agreed on the size of a proposed bargaining unit that would have been created if the union had won an election.

Earlier, Cruse had said some employees approached the union to seek to bargain collectively because of concerns about declining pay and pension benefits.
