When markets and religious holidays collide
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, February 25, 2007
Unfortunately, sometimes our furniture markets overlap with religious holidays.
The 2007 High Point October market will partially overlap with the Jewish holiday of Succot, which starts at sundown Sept. 26 and runs through Oct. 3.
Although not a major holiday, many Orthodox exhibitors, wholesalers, representatives and buyers will have trouble attending and manning the showrooms.
It should also be noted that there are Succot conflicts with fall High Point Markets in 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2015.
It is our fervent hope that no factory or showroom will make attendance mandatory and will not penalize those people whose religious beliefs take preference over the show. Even retailers and suppliers who may have a choice can feel pressured by not attending these events for fear of missing important events.
Should not showrooms and factories be closed on recognized holidays? Cannot dates be adjusted?
In this regard, we hope the showrooms and factories will consider future scheduling of markets.
We request that the October 2007 market dates be changed to the following week if at all possible.
