Retail Bedding Giants named
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, February 25, 2007
High Point — Three bedding specialty chains and a powerhouse furniture store have been named Retail Giants of Bedding by Furniture/Today and will be honored at the newspaper's 2nd annual Bedding Conference in April.
The winners were nominated by their peers and selected by Furniture/Today and its conference co-sponsor, the Home Furnishings International Assn. Two are from Texas, where the Bedding Conference will be held.
The winners are:
-
Mattress Firm, based in Houston, which ranks No. 3 on Furniture/Today's Top 25 Bedding Retailers list. The company is headed by CEO Gary Fazio and President Steve Stagner.
-
Mattress Giant, based in Addison, Texas, which ranks in the No. 6 slot on the Top 25 list. Barrie Brown is CEO and president.
-
1-800-Mattress, based in Long Island City, N.Y., No. 15 on the list. Napoleon Barragan is the company's founder and CEO.
-
American Furniture Warehouse, based in Englewood, Colo., which is No. 28 on Furniture/Today's Top 100 Furniture Stores list. Jake Jabs is CEO.
Top executives from the four retailers will be honored at a gala awards dinner set for April 19 at the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine, just outside Dallas. The dinner is a highlight of the Bedding Conference, which runs April 18–20 at the Gaylord Texan.
"Each of these four retailers has found a way to stand out in a highly competitive bedding landscape," said David Perry, Furniture/Today's bedding editor, who will present the awards. "Three are formidable retailers in markets across the country, while one dominates the Denver market. Each adds something unique in the dynamic world of mattress retailing today."
Mary Frye, HFIA president, said, "HFIA members and our leadership team join me in congratulating the companies being recognized as Retail Giants. The fact that two of the four are Texas firms is just an added bonus, since they'll be honored in Texas at the Bedding Conference."
Frye noted the four winners "are great promoters, and because of the positive focus they place on purchasing bedding, they help other bedding retailers do more business as well. The importance of customer care and selling the benefits of a good night's sleep are also messages that these companies deliver well. These four companies happen to all be giants in their commitment to bedding."
The awards dinner will be sponsored by bedding producer Comfort Solutions. President Dave Roberts said the retail honorees worked hard for their success.
"When you consider how challenging the retail business is and then look at the success of these honorees," Roberts said, "you can easily determine that it is not luck. It is leadership in the truest sense. To not only meet the challenges but to exceed expectations as these leaders have done is a testimony to the quality of their leadership. They deserve to be commended."
