N.C. attorney general targets online retailer
Clint Engel -- Furniture Today, February 25, 2007
High Point — A court has ordered online retailer National Furniture Mfg. to stop taking deposits from consumers, then failing to deliver the goods.
A Wake County Superior Court judge placed a preliminary injunction on the High Point-based company and its owner Myron Savage. The court barred the business from taking upfront payment for furniture orders unless the money is put in escrow, the order is placed within five days and the company gives a realistic delivery time that it either sticks to, or allows for a refund.
Savage could not be reached for comment.
North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper filed suit to seek the court order. Cooper said he sued the company after receiving 34 complaints from consumers in several states. In addition, a local Better Business Bureau received 74 complains in the past three years, the AG said.
According to the suit, National failed to deliver furniture to consumers, including some who have been waiting more than a year.
Last year, Cooper went after another online retailer here, N.C. Furniture Direct, for similar practices and got a similar court order in November, even though the company had not been taking orders since the summer.
