Johnson elected chairman of Furniture Leaders

Belgrade, Mont. — Furniture Leaders, a 65-store buying group in the West, elected Philip C. Johnson as chairman of the board at its annual meeting in Las Vegas during the winter market.
Johnson is co-owner of Johnson Hardware & Furniture, a 93-year-old hardware, furniture and appliance store in Sidney, Mont.
He has served on Furniture Leaders' board for three years.
"I was honored to be elected chairman of the board of Furniture Leaders and look forward to working with our stockholders and suppliers to grow our buying group," Johnson said. "I am anticipating growth from within through an increased percentage of member purchases from our suppliers and through the addition of new stores. Several prospective members attended our meetings in Las Vegas and are very interested in joining our group."
Don Johnson, owner of Warehouse Home Furniture in Green River, Wyo., was elected as a new board member.
Remaining on the board are Ron Nold, Budget Furniture, Aberdeen, S.D.; Kurt Smith, Edward's Furniture, Logan, Utah; Dan Steele, Steele's Warehouse Furniture, Butte, Mont.; Wylie Rucker, Rucker's Furniture, Helena, Mont.; and outgoing chairman Tom Stevens, Baker Furniture, Baker, Mont.
More than 90% of Furniture Leaders stockholders attended the Las Vegas meeting, said the group's executive director, Bruce Dunning.
Members heard about a new container ordering and tracking program that will be operational shortly and will keep the buying group on the leading edge of importing, Dunning said.
He added that Furniture Leaders does business with more than 50 furniture manufacturers or authorized suppliers, and only five were not represented at the Las Vegas Market.
"This market has become important to our group," said Dunning.
Kathy Ireland, whose company licenses a number of home products, was the guest of honor at the Furniture Leaders' annual banquet in Las Vegas. She gave a short speech and dined with the more than 250 guests.
Furniture Leaders has members in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota.
