Cincinnati — An amateur furniture designer from Minnesota has won Selamat Designs' first-ever Create a Classic Design Challenge.
Thatcher Davis, president of the furniture producer, said that Clay Rammage of Delano, Minn., took the top prize with his Urban Tribal Chair.
The chair has become part of Selamat's spring collection and will be available to order at the ucoming High Point Market.
The top three designs were on display at the recent Las Vegas Market, where buyers voted for their choice.
"The voting was extremely tight throughout the week, but in the end Clay's chair claimed victory and we couldn't be more pleased," said Davis.
He added, "Many of the buyers in attendance were already asking when they could place orders and we anticipate a great demand."
Rammage is an accountant for an insurance company who has dabbled part-time in the upholstery business in his community. He also has been sketching furniture designs for years.
"I have never seen any of my designs actually made to scale so this is very emotional to me," he said. Inspired by 1930s Art Deco, he used mahogany and Ultrasuede in his Urban Tribal Chair, which features bowed arms and jointed feet.
Selamat Designs will launch the second annual Create a Classic Design Challenge at the High Point Market. Entry information will be available in its showroom in the International Home Furnishings Center, InterHall H107, and on the Web at www.selamatdesigns.com.
