Lexington lauds success of Tommy Bahama line
By Jeff Linville -- Furniture Today, March 11, 2007
Thomasville, N.C. — Lifestyle brand Tommy Bahama has reached the half-billion-dollar mark in wholesale furniture sales, said producer Lexington Home Brands.
Introduced seven years ago, the branded line has included five collections that pioneered the casual island lifestyle trend.
"We're incredibly proud of the longevity and success of the Tommy Bahama brand," said Lexington President and CEO Phil Haney. "In fact, it has spawned a lot of similar looks in the marketplace."
The whole home line aims for sophisticated yet casual looks, inspired by an island state of mind. The furniture features maple solids and veneers, cane, rattan and leather. Coordinating upholstered pieces offer warm, sun-baked colors and tropical themes.
Lexington will honor the brand by placing the group in a prominent location at its lobby entrance here during the upcoming High Point Market, which opens March 26.
"We're celebrating the brand's success and reminding dealers of why it is the trendsetter by placing the spotlight on the original collection this market," Haney said.
He said Americans want to own established brands, as evidenced by the success of products by the likes of Rolex, Louis Vuitton, BMW and Harley Davidson.
"Having an original best-selling brand on offer is one clear way to differentiate your store from the pack," he said.
Bill Bacon, owner of Bacon's Furniture Galleries in Port Charlotte, Fla., praised the collection. While Tommy Bahama appears to sell everywhere, its style lends itself well to Florida, he said.
"The good thing about (Lexington designers) is that they keep reinventing themselves, coming up with new looks for Tommy," he said. "A collection will only run for so long before it gets stale. They develop new looks, but with a Tommy flavor."
Bacon's has a 10,000-square-foot Lexington gallery and Tommy Bahama is a part of that. "We're still heavily committed to it; we buy it in containers," said Bacon.
Tommy Bahama was established by Oxford Inds. in 1992 and offers apparel, furniture and accessories. In the past seven years, Lexington has introduced five collections: Tommy Bahama Home, Bungalow, Rumba Del Sol, Curacao Reef and Jimbaran Bay, the last of which debuted in April 2006.
