Florida furniture industry donors help create safe panther habitat
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 11, 2007
Davie, Fla. — Thanks largely to furniture industry donors, some big cats here have a reason to purr.
Two Florida panthers, the state's most endangered mammal, are living at the Flamingo Gardens & Wildlife Sanctuary here thanks to efforts of donors, including a number in the furniture business.
Carey Laufer, president of the Florida Home Furnishings Representatives Assn., and his wife, Erin, were recognized for their leadership in the fundraising effort for a new 7,000-square-foot panther habitat at the sanctuary. They also made a personal donation in honor of their children, Sean and Tommi.
Also recognized were platinum donors Robert and Elaine Baer and retailers Baers Furniture, Carls Furniture and City Furniture; gold donors, El Dorado Furniture, Leath/Modernage and Rooms To Go; and other donors including Alexi Sales Corp., APA Marketing, Creative Furniture Inds., FCJ Furniture, the Florida Home Furnishings Marketing Assn., Furniture Avenue, Kenneth and Cynthia Greenwald, Nu-Tech, RD Furnishings, John and Linda Tobin and Gloria Waters.
Flamingo Gardens cares for native animals that have been injured or are unable to survive in the wild for other reasons. The two panthers, Bubba, 7, and Osceola, 6, were raised as pets but became unmanageable as they grew.
