Bolicks, English launch furnishings ventures

By Gary Evans -- Furniture Today, March 18, 2007

Former Hickory Hill president Lew English and Paladin Inds. founders Tim and Elaine Bolick have started two home furnishings ventures, one in occasional and the other in upholstery.

VillaBella, an occasional collection featuring specialty finishes, initially will correlate with the midpriced to high-end Paladin upholstery line, and eventually will be expanded with dining room and bedroom collections.

"We have developed over 35 custom finishes designed for wood, glass and mirrors," said Elaine Bolick, Paladin vice president. "These finishes correlate with the Paladin fabric selections and complement current color trends in all areas of home furnishings."

The VillaBella line will be shown in the Paladin showroom at 110 N. Wrenn St. during next week's High Point Market.

In addition to VillaBella, the new company, as yet unnamed, will introduce a more moderately priced upholstery line that also will feature correlating occasional, with bedroom and dining room scheduled for a later date.

English will serve as president of the new upholstery venture, which will operate with a separate sales force and showroom from the Paladin and VillaBella lines. The upholstery line, which will be made in a factory separate from Paladin, will debut at the fall High Point Market.

The new upholstery will be domestically produced with retail price points in the $799 to $999 range, serving as an entry line to Paladin's price points of $999 and up. The occasional will start at $499 for a cocktail table and move up to $999, depending on customization.

"I am extremely excited about our two new ventures," English said. "I have always admired the work of Tim and Elaine; now, it's going to be fun being part of it."

"We have been friends for many years, and after the successful launch of Paladin, we decided we would all rather work together instead of against each other," said Tim Bolick. "We are still relatively young and have for the most part totally separate retail contacts. While working together, and with Elaine merchandising both lines, we will be able to address two different retail price points and customer bases without overlapping frame styles and fabric applications."
