Moda to become Huffman Koos

Passaic, N.J. — Anthony Mehran likes the Huffman Koos name so much he's decided to convert his own Moda Furniture stores to it.
The founder and CEO of seven-store Moda, based here, acquired the rights to the Huffman Koos name out of bankruptcy in 2005 and originally planned to open in-store galleries in Moda stores.
That was part of a bigger plan to relaunch the Huffman Koos brand at wholesale and retail.
Despite some tarnishing in 2004 with the bankruptcy filing of parent Breuners Home Furnishings Corp. and the subsequent store closings, the Huffman Koos name "still has a great reputation" and recognition in New Jersey and New York, Mehran said.
At least five Moda stores will begin to undergo interior and exterior renovation within 60 to 90 days, he said. The company is shooting for a grand reopening as Huffman Koos before the Fourth of July.
Product in the stores will come from Huffman Koos' wholesale division, which Mehran is launching at next week's High Point Market.
Two of the seven Moda showrooms may close or convert, depending on the results of lease negotiations, Mehran said. He declined to identify the locations.
Mehran wouldn't disclose sales projections or his investment in the move. Initially, when he was planning to open 10,000-square-foot Huffman Koos galleries within Moda, he was shooting for sales of $400 to $500 per square foot, or $4 million to $5 million per gallery.
