Wall decor, accent furniture producers expect solid 2007
Edited by Susan Dickenson -- Furniture Today, March 18, 2007
Research: wall decor
Research by Home Accents Today and New York-based Easy Analytic Software projects U.S. consumers will spend 30% more this year on wall decor than the $6.14 billion spent in 2006. The biggest gains are expected in the West and South, with Nevada's 47% projection leading the U.S. states. Wall decor manufacturers interviewed at the winter markets reported a solid 2006, and most are optimistic about 2007, citing trends in three-dimensional pieces, organic and botanical styling, and pieces that can be layered or clustered in sets.
Survey: accent furniture
Accent furniture manufacturers expect sales to grow slightly or at least stay level with 2006 sales despite challenges brought on by dwindling numbers of retailers and a slower housing market. Furnishings retailers who responded to a January online survey conducted by Home Accents Today said accent furniture represents from 10% to 30% of sales, 95% of which are tables and 86% chairs. Thirty-nine percent of respondents said traditional is their best selling style grouping, and 34% of the retailers plan to carry more of the accent furniture product category in 2007.
Business moves

Pacific Rim Import, a 30-year-old Seattle-based home accent and gift company, should be sold during March, according to John Davidson, managing partner of Inverness Group, the court-appointed receiver for the company.
Crown Crafts is closing its Churchill Weavers hand-woven throw business, the century-old artisan operation that has steadily lost ground in recent years to low-price imports. A non-binding agreement to sell the carriage-trade throw producer to Bedford Cottage fell through and the company is expected to cease operations by the end of March.
