Retail group tries ‘design by social media'

SAN DIEGO - The Contemporary Design Group of retailers has launched its first ever "design by social media" project, inviting its fans, friends and followers to vote on Ultrasuede fabric color choices for a chair and sofa group.
     Consumers can visit the group's website at http://www.contemporarydesign.com to vote for one of six shades - Sunset, Pink Ribbon, Tapioca, Cadet Grey, Maple Wood and Champagne. The winning hue will be displayed in upholstery producer Lazar's High Point showroom on select BKind3 frames at the October market.
     The initiative is part of the buying and performance group's newest marketing campaign, which includes a website revamp, design blog and social media integration, CDG said.
     "Our goal is to speak to our customers, educate them about design, provide inspiration and tell our stories," said CDG Executive Director Alicia Mendez. "Shopping local to support your community is part of the message, but we also want customers to know that we're proud to be partnered only with the finest manufacturers, suppliers and fabric resources in the business."
     CDG member retailers are promoting the project, although consumers have to visit the CDG blog to place their vote and see the current results, Mendez said.
     The Contemporary Design Group's members include 23 modern and contemporary home furnishings retailers.
