SINGAPORE — The International Furniture Fair Singapore/ASEAN Furniture Show is shaking up the Asian furniture show circuit by changing its dates in 2014, a move that will put it closer to heavily attended furniture shows in southern China.

For the past six years, the show was held March 9-12, which put it closer to shows in Malaysia and the Philippines. The new dates are March 13-16, 2014.

This puts the show just ahead of the 3F International Famous Furniture Fair in Dongguan, China, which is set for March 16-20, and the China International Furniture Fair in Guangzhou, which runs March 18-22, according to their websites.

The Décor Show and Hospitality 360o also will be held in conjunction with IFFS/AFS during the new dates. IFFS and the companion events will still be held at the Singapore Expo trade show complex.

Show organizer IFFS Pte Ltd. said that with the change, the group hopes to "better align its activities towards achieving its strategic growth objectives."

IFFS Pte Ltd. Chairman Ernie Koh called the change a "new way forward and a bold move." He said the decision came after careful deliberation and consultation with the industry.

"Buyers usually visit several shows in (the) ASEAN and Asia regions, which results in extended sourcing trips," Koh said. "The new set of dates closes the gap between IFFS/AFS and the southern China furniture shows, significantly shortening a buyer's travel duration to just one and a half weeks, as opposed to the original excess of two weeks, which saves precious time and money. All things considered, we felt that it was time we spearheaded change, in hopes of delivering even better content and experiences to our exhibitors and visitors."

The change presents a potential quandary for other shows in the region including the Malaysian International Furniture Fair, which is scheduled for March 4-8. It was unclear whether MIFF officials plan to change those dates to be closer to Singapore.

According to its website, Manila Fame in the Philippines is scheduled for March 13-16, the same dates as Singapore. It was not immediately clear whether that show would change its dates to avoid a conflict with Singapore.

Another Asian furniture show, the Thailand International Furniture Fair, is scheduled for March 12-16.

Maison & Object Asia, a new event, is scheduled for March 10-13 in the Marina Bay Sands Hotel and Casino in Singapore.
