Dyersburg, Tenn. — Billy Yates, co-founder of General Appliance & Furniture here, has retired as president and CEO.
While Yates, 81, continues as chairman, the business is now led by his sons Joe Yates, president, and Mark Yates, vice president. Oneal Spoon, another vice president, continues to manage the appliance division.
The downtown business, opened in 1947 as General Appliance & Television, was named Small Business of the Year in January by the Dyersburg-Dyer Country Chamber of Commerce for businesses with 16 to 50 employees.
The two-level, 24,000-square-foot store has been a La-Z-Boy, Broyhill and Sealy dealer since 1960, the year it changed its name to General Appliance & Furniture.

BB&T
Winston-Salem, N.C. — J. Tol Broome Jr., senior loan administrator for BB&T Corp., has been named president of the banking company's Commercial Finance business.
Also, three veteran bankers have joined BB&T Commercial Finance to create a new supply chain finance team.
Broome has been with the company since 1983. Before he became senior loan administrator, he was Leadership Development Program manager, business services officer and regional loan administrator.
"Initially, Tol will further transition our business model to more efficiently support receivables-oriented lending within our banking network, while enhancing the emerging supply-chain finance programs geared toward larger, corporate clients," said Clarke Starnes, Specialized Lending manager.
The new hires — Dev Maguire, group manager, and Jack Sickling and Pete Loescher, managers — will manage vendor trade finance programs and accounts receivable purchase programs.
All previously held similar management positions in commercial banking. The team will be based in Atlanta.
