Smooth transitions

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 25, 2007

Transitional design is an inviting blend of both traditional and contemporary elements. This style theme borrows common aspects from both categories in terms of finishes, fabrics and materials without becoming totally one or the other. While transitional may contain such recognizable elements as the traditional four posters and finial shapes of Aspenhome's Potomac bed, the other architectural lines veer away from traditional, particularly for the soft curves in the headboard.

  1. JAYMAR
    IHFC H-712
Condo combines deep seating and American styling in a contemporary sectional frame, $2,495

  2. DÉCOR-REST FURNITURE
    208 Jacobs Place
This sofa represents one of the five groups Décor-Rest is showing this market in partnership with TV's Designer Guys Steve Sabados and Chris Hyndman. Sofas will retail from $949 to $1,100.

  3. HOMELEGANCE
    212 Jacobs Place
HomElegance strengthens its bedroom lineup this market with 10 new groups. The No. 858 platform bed has transitional styling with traditional elements. The group also includes three different dining tables.

  4. ASPENHOME
    IHFC M-1301
Potomac, from Aspenhome, has a transitional feel with Federal roots. The group is an expansion into adult bedroom of a youth version that won a Pinnacle Award.

  5. RIVERSIDE
    IHFC C-302
A rich mahogany finish highlights Riverside's newest home entertainment console and hutch.

  6. GLEN ARBOR
    IHFC M-531
Many of the new transitional looks this market come from updating traditional designs. Saint Germain, from Glen Arbor, features swirl mahogany veneers.

  7. LAURENT LEATHER
    Hamilton Square 127
This neatly proportioned transitional chair (No. 590-01), sporting eight-way hand-tied construction on a hardwood frame, is made by North Carolina craftsmen, $2,624.

  8. TEMPLE
    200 N. Hamilton St. S-210
This 85-inch sofa — which combines Hamilton Fabrics' Intrigue body cloth, Bartson Fabrics' Leopard (for the large pillows) and Heritage House's Etna (for the smaller pillows) — is targeted at $2,499 retail.

  9. BERNHARDT
    IHFC D-601
This circular-shaped table is part of Bernhardt's Martha Stewart line. It is made with Mozambique veneers and swings open to reveal shelves for added function.

  10. PALLISER
    220 Elm S-400
Serene, simple lines characterize Palliser's Peterson chair and Alyssa sofa, shown in chenilles and action plains. Approximate retail is $599.
