HP may re-evaluate market dates
Larry Thomas -- Furniture Today, April 8, 2007
High Point — The market's new late March dates and its Monday-through-Sunday schedule drew numerous complaints from attendees, but members of the High Point Market Authority board were noncommittal on whether dates would be changed.
At the board's most recent meeting during market, Market Authority President Brian Casey said the organization is in the midst of a research project that will, among other things, quiz participants on which dates they prefer.
Preliminary results should be available in late April, and dates could be re-evaluated after that, he said.
"I have not met one manufacturer, one retailer or one (sales) representative who is pleased with these dates," Morris Savin, an executive with high-end manufacturer IPF Furniture, told board members.
Several board members said they had heard from exhibitors that some retailers skipped market because schools and colleges in many parts of the country were on spring break.
"Scheduling market in the middle of spring break is not a good thing," said board member David Price, president of Chicago-area retailer Toms-Price.
Savin, who said he was attending his 87th High Point market, was one of several Hamilton-Wrenn area exhibitors who told the board that some designers had expressed displeasure over the Monday-through-Sunday schedule, because they preferred having a weekend early in the market to effectively shop.
