Henredon to relocate showroom
By Carole Sloan -- Furniture Today, April 8, 2007
High Point — Henredon will close its 100,000-square-foot showroom on Ward Street here and move to the Drexel Heritage building on Eastchester Drive in time for the fall High Point Market.
Henredon will occupy the first floor of the building and Drexel the second, said Jeff Young, president of the high-end HDM division of Furniture Brands International, which includes Henredon and Drexel along with Maitland-Smith.
The move is being made in part to cut costs, Young said, but equally significant is the way the market has changed.
"The days are gone when we have to 'wow' the world with dramatic presentations and vast amounts of new product (every market)," he said. "We should let the merchandise speak for itself.... Today it's all about thinking retail."
Young said the 60-year-old Henredon building needs extensive repairs that would cost more than half a million dollars.
Henredon's Ralph Lauren, Lauren and Barbara Barry licensed collections also will move to the Drexel building. They currently are showcased across the courtyard from the main Henredon showroom.
Barbara Barry also may retain its Ward Street space for the fall market, set for Oct. 1–7, depending on offshore attendance, since Barry's line is particularly attractive to the international market, Young said.
HDM's more streamlined approach to product launches will affect the Ralph Lauren and Lauren lines this October, he said. Both have had major introductions twice a year, and "attention to SKUs introduced has not been good," Young said.
Starting this fall, Ralph Lauren will retain its twice-a-year launch cycle, probably with fewer SKUs, he said, while Lauren will move to once-a-year introductions.
