Carl G. Merschman, Homemakers founder

Altoona, Iowa — Carl G. Merschman, founder of retailer Homemakers Furniture, has died. He was 77.
With just an eighth-grade education, Merschman became widely regarded as a sharp businessman, founding Homemakers Furniture in 1974 in Des Moines, Iowa.
When the two Homemakers stores and their WoodMarc case goods manufacturing subsidiary were acquired by Nebraska Furniture Mart in 2000, the Merschman family remained in charge.
Homemakers, with 250,000 square feet of showroom space in Des Moines, is said to be the largest furniture business in the state. Merschman's sons are involved in the business. Dave is president and Roger and Alan are vice presidents.
In addition to his three sons, Merschman is survived by his wife, two daughters, nine grandchildren, four sisters and two brothers. He was preceded in death by an infant son and his parents.
