Retail Giants of Bedding: Mattress Firm expands steadily
Builds sustainable growth in bedding retail
David Perry -- Furniture Today, April 26, 2007
HOUSTON — Mattress Firm methodically is following a carefully considered growth plan devised by its savvy senior management team.
"We would rather do things right than do things fast," said Gary Fazio, a highly respected, 35-year bedding veteran who joined Mattress Firm in 2001 and is the chain’s chairman and CEO. "Speed is not always the winner. We are thoughtful about what we do."
Fazio has been putting the pieces for sustainable growth in place since he left bedding sales leader Sealy and moved to the retail side of the business. It is a whole new ballgame, he acknowledges, one that constantly tests its leaders. He thrives on the challenges.
Mattress Firm is thriving, too. The retailer ranks in the No. 3 position on Furniture|Today’s list of the Top 25 Bedding Retailers, and posted a 19.9% sales gain to record revenues of $356 million in 2005. (The newspaper’s rankings for 2006 will be released in a few months.)
