High Point — Erica J. Wingo, who earned a perfect 4.0 grade-point average on her way to a bachelor's degree, has won this year's Haverty Cup as the top graduate in High Point University's home furnishings program.
Wingo, a native of Farmville, Va., became interested in a career in home furnishings through employment at retailer Green Front Furniture in her hometown. During college, she worked as an intern for La-Z-Boy and Fine Furniture Design & Marketing, and worked in High Point Market showrooms.
"Erica is both an outstanding student and individual. She is the type of person who can work independently and also gets along well with her fellow students. She will go far in her career in the home furnishings industry," said Richard Bennington, chair of HPU's Home Furnishings and Design Department.
Wingo will receive a $2,500 cash award and will have her name engraved on the Haverty Cup.
Rawson Haverty Sr., the late chairman of Atlanta-based retailer Havertys, established the award in 1988 to encourage young people to pursue careers in home furnishings.
