Gallery, Select Comfort top performers again

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, May 27, 2007

Despite posting a sales decrease last year, No. 58 Gallery took the title in two of three key Top 100 performance categories for the third consecutive year.

The Houston-based retailer again posted the best sales per square foot number, running away from the competition with a $1,595 average and well above the $316 median this year for the 44 stores for which estimates were available.

The retailer turned its inventory an average of 32 times, which also blew away the competition and the 5.3-times median stock turns for all Top 100 stores reporting.

Gallery managed this despite a 4.3% decrease in furniture, bedding and accessories sales to $129.1 million, showing just how far ahead it was in the first place. (Gallery's sales per square foot came in at $1,600 for the 2005 sales year while its stock turned an average of 28 times that year). It was only the third sales decrease for the retailer since it first joined the Top 100 ranks in 1988.

No. 12 Select Comfort was second best again in the sales-per-square-foot category with an average of $1,244. It dropped to third in stock turns (averaging 17 times) behind Gallery and No. 89 PMD Furniture Direct, which turned its inventory an average of 21.3 times.

Select leads in margin

Select Comfort, the Minneapolis-based airbed maker and the largest sleep specialist in the Top 100, repeated as the leader in the gross margin category with a 60.9% average, up slightly from 2005's 59.4% average. It was followed by 1800mattress.com, No. 51 on the Top 100 and formerly referred to as Dial-A-Mattress, with an average gross margin of 51%.

No. 7 Pier 1 Imports, despite a large sales decline and a net loss in its fiscal year ended March 3 as well as for the year before, had the second-best gross margin average (50.9%) while Gallery and No. 71 Norwalk — The Furniture Idea were tied for fourth with a 50% average gross margin.

Gallery and Select Comfort again were the only companies to make it into the Top 10 of all three categories. No. 2 Rooms To Go shows up twice, posting the third-best sales per square foot average ($900) and the tenth-highest stock turns (eight times). 1800mattress.com appears twice for its second-best average gross margin and tie for sixth-highest inventory turns (11 times).

Also, No. 72 Sit'n Sleep appears twice as the company tying with 1800mattress.com on inventory turns and for the tenth-best sales-per-square-foot average ($513).

The median sales for square foot was $316 for all stores this year based on 44 estimates, considerably better than the $289 median for all stores on last year's Top 100.

The median stock turn figure for this year's stores was 5.3 times, down from 5.6 times for last year's group of Top 100 stores, and gross margin for all stores dropped one percentage point compared to last year's group to a median 45%.
