Canadian Home Furnishings Market set for Jan. 11 opening
Michael J. Knell -- Furniture Today, October 1, 2013
MONTREAL — Organizers have announced that the 42nd edition of the Canadian Home Furnishings Market will open for its four-day run at the International Centre in Toronto on Jan. 11.
TCHFM is the only national and retailer-focused furniture and home furnishings trade event held in Canada.
"We are ready to welcome approximately 7,000 buyers and 350 exhibitors, who reaffirm that the market is among the most anticipated events in the industry, as it is the only one bringing all the major players in Canadian residential furnishings together under one roof," Sylvain Gervais, interim general manager of both TCHFM and the Quebec Furniture Manufacturers Assn., said in a statement.
The QFMA owns and operates TCHFM.
The event will kick off with a welcome reception in the main entrance to the International Centre beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10.
The Canadian Home Furnishings Alliance will hold its annual awards gala in the center's Orion Ballroom immediately after the reception at 7 p.m.
The 2014 edition of the perennial Trends Display, once again created by the Montreal-based design team of André Caron and Pierre d'Anjou, will be unveiled at a cocktail reception on Saturday evening, Jan. 11, at 6 p.m. For the second year running, the display, located in the center of Hall 5, will be influenced by the 2014 home and interior palette created by the Pantone Color Institute.
For the third consecutive year, design personality Janette Ewen will stage her Pop-up Vignettes throughout the halls of the International Centre.
"I am delighted and enthusiastic about working on TCHFM 2014. Once again, our Pop-up Vignettes will showcase leading trends for exhibitors, with this year's inspiration being drawn from the major design capitals, to convey trends on a global scale," Ewen said.
This will also be the second year for the Market Must-Haves as selected by a yet-to-be announced jury panel. The panel will stroll through the market on Saturday and choose pieces they believe should be on everyone's radar. "Look for the distinctive tent cards and discover their market must-haves," Gervais said.
Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, will be the speaker for the second consecutive year at the 2014 conference session, to be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, in the Orion Ballroom.
Eiseman assists companies in making key color decisions that are critical to the success of a product or an environment. In her presentation, she takes an in-depth look at the nine color palettes from the Pantone 2014 trend forecast. This highly visual presentation will showcase how color can influence design choices for the upcoming year.
Admission is free to TCHFM attendees.
SOFA, the International Centre's permanent showroom annex, will host two themed social events during market. "Beer and Burgers at the Bunkie" will begin at 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, in the Mezzanine area of Hall 1. "Breakfast at the Bunkie" will be served on the last day of market, at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, also in the Mezzanine area.
In addition to temporary exhibits in the five halls of the International Centre, some six or eight furniture companies with permanent showrooms in the surrounding area are also expected to participate.
