Furniture Bank offering $100 sponsorship level

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, June 24, 2007

Responding to industry requests, the non-profit National Furniture Bank Assn. is offering an additional sponsorship level at $100, called Help1Up Friend.

The previous entry level sponsorship was $1,000.

Help1Up is the home furnishings industry's free service to remove used furniture for distribution to those in need, through a network of dozens of furniture banks across the country.

Furniture banks collect used home furnishings, give the donor a tax receipt, then give the furnishings to families in need. Typical recipients are women and children escaping domestic violence, families living below the poverty line and victims of natural disasters.

"We've had many requests from individuals asking how they can support us," said Don Lawrence, NFBA executive director. "People who become a Help1Up Friend are not only ensuring that we can keep opening more furniture banks, but they also demonstrate their commitment publicly and set an example for others to follow."

Help1Up Friends will be listed on the Help1Up.org Web site and will receive Help1Up lapel pins.

Kathy Parks, executive director of International Home Furnishings Representatives Assn. and a member of the NFBA board of directors, said the Help1Up Friend sponsorship will enable more people to take part.

"Representatives tell me all the time they think the NFBA is a fantastic organization and now they have a way to get involved," she said.

Mary Frye, president of the Home Furnishings International Assn. and an NFBA board member, said the new level will promote participation by small businesses.

"There are many retailers in the HFIA with only one or two locations," she said. "A $1,000 sponsorship might require a plan for a return on the investment, but $100 is an easy decision to help children and families in need. Most of us spend $100 on things that don't make any long-term difference to anyone."

Lawrence said a group of employees of a single company can combine their Help1Up Friend donations to attain a corporate sponsorship, and the individuals will still retain their Help1Up Friend status.

Corporate sponsors are entitled to have a description, hyperlink and logo on the upcoming sponsor listing page at Help1Up.org. Retailers currently have store locations listed under the "Find a Participating Retailer" feature.
