Mattress Retailing 101: New, safer day dawns for bedding industry
David Perry -- Furniture Today, July 22, 2007
A new day has dawned in the mattress industry. It's a day that has been many years in the making, and that has involved thousands of members of the bedding industry who have introduced new fire-resistant technologies to the market.
The new era officially started July 1, when a new federal mattress flammability standard went into effect. It states that all beds made on or after that date must meet the new FR standard. In addition, the law requires producers to implement strict quality control and record-keeping programs.
What does this mean for you, the retail sales associate?
In this special installment of our Mattress Retailing 101 series, we present an overview of the key aspects of the new FR standard. It's basic information you need to know to discuss this issue with the consumers who visit your stores.
Even if your store doesn't plan to make FR protection part of its sales messages, you still need to be knowledgeable about the issue. When the standard was established in February 2006, media coverage was extensive, generating 92 million consumer news media impressions.
Equal or greater media coverage is expected this summer as the new standard takes effect. You need to know what this law is designed to do, what it isn't designed to do, and how you can use it to your advantage.
