China creates export zone

Beijing — The Chinese government has established China's first furniture export industrial zone in one of the country's western provinces.
The zone will be on a 328-acre site in Qionglai City in the Sichuan Province in western China. Facilities will be built to house about 50 of the province's furniture manufacturers. Construction will begin in January and be completed by 2010.
To qualify to build in the zone, companies must have annual sales of 50 million yuan, or $6.4 million. They also must have a high market share, brand recognition and export capacity.
It was unclear whether the zone would allow for tax benefits or other government subsidies to furniture exporters, and how many of the companies in the area produce residential furniture suitable for the U.S. market.
