C.S. Wo debuts first store on U.S. mainland
Costa Mesa unit said off to strong start

COSTA MESA, Calif. — Top 100 company C.S. Wo & Sons introduced its first U.S. mainland store here to a gathering of about 400 vendors, friends and other guests this past weekend.
The 20,000-square-foot showroom in the South Coast Home Furnishings Center on Interstate 405 blends the strengths of C.S. Wo’s two upscale stores in Hawaii with looks that appeal to consumers here, including a strong offering of Mediterranean-influenced styles, said Brad Harris, division manager for C.S. Wo & Sons.
Initial response during the soft opening has been “phenomenal,” Harris said, adding, “I wish I had a nickel for every person who has said there’s nothing like it in Costa Mesa or California.”
Among the stores striking features are a tumbled travertine stone floor at the entrance and covering about 60% of the showroom floor, water elements and a thorough mix of C.S. Wo’s signature Asian antique furniture and statuettes, and other accessories blended into the vignettes.
The retailer also has dedicated considerable space to an accents area, which includes a wide variety of permanent florals, vases, lighting and other items.
In Hawaii, home accents account for about 20% of C.S. Wo & Son’s sales, Harris said. It’s too early to say how much business they will account for here, but, “That’s what they are buying right off the bat,” he said.
Key furniture suppliers include Bernhardt, Stanley, Fine Furniture Design and Marketing, Schnadig, McCreary Modern and Lee.
C.S. Wo declined to disclose sales projections for the store.
The family-owned retailer operates 14 stores under various banners throughout Hawaii. Furniture/Today estimates sales reached $88 million last year, up more than 7% from 2006.
