How the numbers are compiled

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, August 19, 2007

Furniture/Today's exclusive survey of the Top Retail Giants ranks the Top 25 U.S. furniture and bedding retailers, the Top 5 lifestyle furniture stores and the Top 5 discount department stores, based on furniture and bedding sales.

Data is for fiscal years ended Dec. 31, unless otherwise noted.

Companies on all three lists are ranked according to their estimated 2006 sales of furniture and bedding. Decorative accessory sales, including lamps, area rugs, wall décor and mirrors, are excluded. Decorative accessory sales were included in the Top 100 U.S. Furniture Stores ranking, published in Furniture/Today's May 28, 2007, issue.

All sales figures, except those of publicly held companies that break out furniture and bedding sales as a separate line of business, are Furniture/Today market research estimates. Prior year estimates are revised as additional data become available. Revisions are footnoted in the tables.

Sales estimates were derived from a variety of sources, including the companies themselves, public company filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, discussions with industry analysts and suppliers, and published and unpublished reports, including newspaper articles in various retailing areas.

Senior Editor Carole Sloan, Director of Market Research Kay Anderson, Senior Research Specialist Dana French, Research Specialist Diane Hoth and Database Coordinator Cynthia Myers compiled the data for this report.
