It's paper but smells like...
Susan M. Andrews -- Furniture Today, August 19, 2007
Montreal — Fabric source Greatex Mills, working with paper producer Cascades, has developed a leather-scented paper product designed to put a "new leather" smell in furniture packaging.
Greatex said the product was designed to enhance the company's Oekopelle leather-fabric hybrid product, which it calls "leather on a roll."
Greatex President Sheldon Lewis said the company has worldwide exclusivity for the furniture industry for the scented paper.
"It's really something new and special," he said. "I envision that in three years, everyone who sells vinyl, polyurethane and leather furniture will use this product inside their packaging, so that when their furniture is opened, the impression will be a 'new leather' smell."
Lewis said the product has already gained approval from a big client, who had received a complaint from a consumer who opened his furniture and found it didn't smell like leather. The company tested the same furniture, including the scented paper inside the plastic packaging, and found that when it was opened, the leather smell was present.
"Our customer was sold on the product after that," Lewis said.
The as-yet-unnamed product will debut at the Decosit fabric show, set for Sept. 8–11 in Brussels, Belgium.
