Thurmo will debut Jacuzzi mattresses; president named

By David Perry -- Furniture Today, September 12, 2007

Thurmo-Medical Sleep Systems will show its new Jacuzzi memory foam mattress line at the upcoming market here, and also will introduce a new president.

Frank Stevens, a High Point businessman, has been named president of Thurmo-Medical Sleep Systems, formerly known as Thurmo-Pudic USA. The company has backed off its plans to rename the company Jacuzzi Sleep Systems.

Company founder Tom Morgan said health issues prompted him to step back from day-to-day management, although he will remain CEO at Thurmo-Medical as long as his health permits.

"I feel I have done what I can," Morgan said. "It's time for new, dynamic leadership to take us national."

Stevens, born and raised in High Point, was involved in the textile chemicals business for many years, building a multimillion-dollar business with facilities around the world. He also has worked in the financial services industry and in furniture retailing.

"He has strong national and international contacts," Morgan said.

Stevens said he's excited about the opportunities at Thurmo-Medical Sleep Systems, which is marketing the Jacuzzi Sleep Systems line of mattresses.

"I love the technology we have," he said. "We have something the world wants. We have a true technological advantage. I've always sold on the basis of having a technological advantage. I'm not a believer in selling on price. We will be selling on our technology and on the value of our products."

Stevens said that with his background in textile chemistry, he understands the basics of the technology used in the advanced memory foam in the Jacuzzi Sleep Systems line.

"Our beds are much more comfortable to sleep on," he said. "And you don't have to worry about body impressions. Our product will look and feel elegant."

The new Jacuzzi Sleep Systems line will retail from about $2,000 to about $6,000. At least four beds will be shown at the High Point Market, Oct. 1–7, in the Thurmo-Medical Sleep Systems' Radisson Hotel showroom.

Stevens said Jacuzzi offers "an internationally recognized brand name" and operates with high ethical standards. "That is one of the reasons we and Jacuzzi have chosen each other as partners," he said.

Thurmo-Medical Sleep Systems continues to work with Dynamic Systems, a pioneer in the development of memory foam. Its newest version of gel visco has a softer feel that lends itself to use closer to the sleeping surface, company officials said. The gel visco also has a green marketing story, since it's made of 42% vegetable extract.
