FIDX to meet online, by telephone Sept. 26

Group working on standards for data, electronic commerce

Brian Carroll -- Furniture Today, September 18, 2007

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The next meeting of the Furniture Industry Data Exchange group is set for Wednesday, Sept. 26, beginning at 1:30 p.m.

The FIDX meeting will be conducted online and over phone lines. Individuals can join in by calling (712) 775-7015 and using access code 760-164-354. Visual elements of the meeting, such as the proposed data schemas, can be viewed during the meeting by visiting https://www.gotomeeting.com/join/760164354 on the Web.

The agenda includes a review of proposed changes to two purchase order schemas, proposed standard product attributes for electronic commerce, and a discussion of warranty schemas for warranty registrations and warranty claims.

The product attributes define all furniture product categories, such as accessories, living room, home entertainment; types of furniture, such as sofas, chairs, chests; and sub-types, such as wing chairs and bombe chests. They also define attributes such as size, color and finish.

“Our objective is to define ‘recommended’ but not ‘mandatory’ attributes that consumers can use to quickly, easily and accurately locate furniture products on Web sites,” said Ron Martell, FIDX steering committee chair. “We feel this will help consumers who use the Internet to collect the product information they need to make their buying decisions.”

Martell, who also is chairman at Micro D, said the meeting should last between 30 and 60 minutes.

“I am guardedly optimistic that we are making progress implementing the FIDX standards,” he said. “By the end of this year, Micro D expects to have FIDX catalogs for about 300 furniture vendors, up from 40 at the first of this year, and we are creating the product catalogs for major retailers who want to display all of their products on their Web sites.”
