Brussels show competes on quality, not price

Brussels, Belgium — A focus on quality is helping Decosit, but not every change has been good, according to the decorative fabric show's executive director
"We have the professional and quality level of the visitors we are seeking. But we are not satisfied with the total number of visitors," said Patrick Geysels, who admitted that attendance at this month's show was below that of 2006.
"We are focusing on high level and quality exhibitors and visitors as well as the creativity and product development.... We can't compete with China on price," he said.
He added that some changes may be ahead for the Brussels event.
"We don't want to get bigger, and if in the future we have to shrink a bit, it's OK," said Geysels. However, he said Decosit will remain a four-day event, despite discussion about reducing it to three. The last day of a show usually has 50% of the visitors from the previous days and shortening the show would hurt its 370 exhibitors, he said.
Next year's show will continue to be held over a weekend because of tight bookings for the Heysel exhibition center, but in response to suggestions, "We will try to change to weekdays in 2009 if possible," said Geysels.
As for Decosit Hong Kong, with its third showing set for March 12-14, organizers have a goal of 60 exhibitors. There were 50 exhibitors in the first year and 45 this year.
"If we need to cancel because we haven't met the goal of 60 exhibitors it doesn't mean we shouldn't go beyond Brussels," Geysels said. "Hong Kong is a niche market. Perhaps we would work with a partner exhibition with the same criteria and visitor base and compatible product lines."
