FAYETTEVILLE, N.Y. — Stickley President Alfred Audi, who took a company that was on the verge of collapse in 1974 and rebuilt it into a thriving high-end brand, has died after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 69.
The L & J.G. Stickley Co.’s factory in Manlius, N.Y., was down to 22 employees when Audi acquired it 33 years ago.
He began hiring craftsmen and rebuilding the business. In 1989, he reintroduced Stickley’s Mission-style furniture, which had been off the market since 1919. The gamble paid off, and the line has gained iconic status as well as generating substantial sales.
Alfred Audi and his wife, Aminy, have been top executives at the company.
Today, Stickley employs 1,600 at plants in New York, North Carolina and Vietnam.
