Ikea donates goods to California fire victims

Firefighters can eat for free in San Diego, Los Angeles stores

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, October 30, 2007

SAN DIEGO — Ikea’s San Diego store has given out more than $4,000 in food and supplies and is offering a free meal to firefighters as residents here recover from wildfires that destroyed some 2,000 homes in Southern California.

Among the goods donated by the store to fire victims: 216 pillow cushions, 275 toys, 100 can openers, 576 lemon cookies, more an  500 dog food bowls and 700 dog waste bags.

Through November, firefighters can receive a free meal at the Top 100 company’s stores in San Diego and Los Angeles, according to Ikea spokeswoman Mona Liss.

The San Diego store — near Qualcomm Stadium, which was converted into an evacuation center during the height of the fires — remained open during the worst days of the blazes. Early last week, business was down and about 50 employees who were evacuated from their homes couldn’t make it in, but by Wednesday sales were back to normal, the company said.
