San Diego — Ikea's San Diego store has given out more than $4,000 in food and supplies and is offering a free meal to firefighters as residents here recover from wildfires that destroyed some 2,000 homes in Southern California.
Among the goods donated by the store to fire victims: 216 pillow cushions, 275 toys, 100 can openers, 576 lemon cookies, more than 500 dog food bowls and 700 dog waste bags.
Through November, firefighters can receive a free meal at the Top 100 company's stores in San Diego and Los Angeles, according to Ikea spokeswoman Mona Liss.
The San Diego store — near Qualcomm Stadium, which was converted into an evacuation center during the height of the fires — remained open during the worst days of the blazes. Business was down for a few days and about 50 employees who were evacuated from their homes couldn't make it in, but sales were soon back to normal, the company said.
