Help1Up named NHFA’s ‘charity of choice’

Group supports furniture banks

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, November 9, 2007

HIGH POINT — In an unprecedented move, the National Home Furnishings Assn. has named Help1Up as its “charity of choice.”

“This is the first time we’ve recommended a charitable cause to our members. It’s a win-win for everybody involved,” said NHFA President Wogan Badcock III of Mulberry, Fla.-based retailer W.S. Badcock.

Help1Up is the service made available by the National Furniture Bank Assn., which represents more than three dozen furniture banks across America. Furniture banks collect gently used and new furniture from the public and businesses, then provide it to families in need.

Typical recipients are women and children escaping domestic violence, victims of natural disasters and families living in poverty.

Badcock said the NHFA executive committee and board voted to support Help1Up.

“I can think of no better way for consumers to dispose of their unwanted used home furnishings products than to give them to families in need. We encourage our members to support Help1Up,” he said.

Furniture banks annually collect and distribute more than 1.5 million home furnishings items. The mission of the NFBA is to expand the service capacity of existing furniture banks and to open new ones in areas without one.

“Retailers and manufacturers are more aware than ever about Americans’ concern about how businesses impact the environment,” said Don Lawrence, executive director of the NFBA. “We keep used furniture out of landfills and incinerators, and also provide beds for children without one. Who could so no to an effort like that?”
