Mathis opens big Calif. store
Joan Gunin -- Furniture Today, November 18, 2007
Ontario, Calif. — Mathis Bros. is opening its largest home furnishings store Monday at The Ontario Center in this Southern California city.
Totaling about 500,000 square feet, the new complex is billed by Mathis as housing the largest furniture store in California.
The space includes two retail levels of about 150,000 square feet each, a 170,000-square-foot, high-cubed distribution center, and 40,000 square feet of corporate offices.
Beyond furniture, the store will sell electronics, accessories and holiday gifts, with prices from promotional to high end. Mathis Bros. also will offer free in-store designer services.
The new store, which will serve as a second headquarters for the Oklahoma City-based retailer, is expected to become Mathis Bros.' top volume producer, projected to generate sales of more than $100 million annually.
Ranked 31st on Furniture/Today's survey of the Top 100 U.S. furniture stores, the family-run retailer had an estimated $304 million in 2006 furniture, bedding and accessory sales at eight stores in Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Okla., and Indio, Calif.
Its largest unit, the 130,000-square-foot hometown store, will be surpassed by the Ontario location.
The Ontario unit is the company's second in Southern California and the fourth store operating under the Mathis Bros. name. In Oklahoma, the company also operates Thomasville and Drexel Heritage stores, Rooms Today (room packages), and Factory Direct (Lady Americana-branded bedding).
