Here is a partial list of current and future activity at furniture factories around Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Information was provided by the companies and/or gathered during plant visits. For non-Vietnamese-owned companies, the year established indicates the start of operations in Vietnam.


AA Corp.


Ownership: Vietnamese
Established: 1991
Categories: bedroom, dining, occasional for export; upholstery and contract for local market
Workers: 800
Current shipments: 16 containers a month for export
Facilities: 200,000-square-foot plant.
Future plans: 140,000-square-foot plant under construction for Ferguson Copeland business; another similar-size plant for Pennsylvania House in May or June 2005; 400 additional workers; 30 containers per month for export by 2006.

The Country Co.


Ownership: Vietnamese
Established: 1992
Categories: bedroom, dining and occasional
Workers: 700-plus
Current shipments: 100 containers per month
Facilities: 170,000-square-foot plant
Future plans: Plans to build new 260,000-square-foot plant within two years.

Great Veca


Ownership: Taiwanese
Established: 1992
Categories: bedroom, dining and occasional
Workers: 2,300
Current shipments: 150 containers per month
Facilities: 300,000-square-foot plant and 200,000-square-foot plant built in 1992; 1.2 million-square-foot plant completed this year.
Future plans: Targeting 250 containers a month for coming year; target for 2006 is 500 per month. Moving from 80% dining room to 70% bedroom.

Green River


Ownership: Taiwanese, part of Green River Group
Established: 2001
Categories: bedroom, dining, curios and occasional
Workers: 2,100
Current shipments: 285 to 300 containers per month
Facilities: 1.1 million-square-foot plant.
Future plans: adding new finish line (for total of three), components plant and warehouse to bring shipments to 350 to 400 per month; Green River Group set to start construction by year-end on Timber Industry Co., a 1 million-square-foot bedroom plant with two finish lines that will employ 1,400 and ship 150 containers a month.

Hoa Binh


Ownership: Vietnamese
Established: 1997
Categories: ready-to-assemble bedroom, dining and occasional
Workers: 800
Current shipments: 80 containers per month
Facilities: 130,000-square-foot plant
Future plans: New finishing line for indoor furniture with capacity of 80 containers a month scheduled to begin operation in October, with an additional 200 workers.

Hoang Sinh


Ownership: Vietnamese
Established: 2002
Categories: 50% pool tables; 50% bedroom, dining, occasional and outdoor
Workers: 600
Current shipments: 40
Facilities: 240,000-square-foot plant
Future plans: Additional 240,000-square-foot plant set open in September, with an additional 600 to 700 employees; depending on customer negotiations, new plant will be for pool tables or indoor furniture.

Hong Yi/Cha Ki


Ownership: Taiwanese
Established: 1999
Categories: bedroom, dining and occasional
Workers: 1,050
Current shipments: 110 containers per month
Facilities: 1.2 million-square-foot plant
Future plans: New bedroom finish line operational by end of August, with 500 additional employees.

Koda


Ownership: Singaporan
Established: 2000
Categories: bedroom, dining, occasional and upholstery
Workers: 450
Current shipments: 250 containers per month
Facilities: 21,000-square-foot Koda Vietnam plant built in 2000; 120,000-square-foot Koda International plant in 2002.
Future plans: Nearby land purchased for additional plant, set to begin construction within six months.

Johnson Wood/Cheer Hope


Ownership: Taiwanese
Established: 2003 (Johnson Wood); 1992 (Cheer Hope)
Categories: bedroom, dining and occasional
Workers: 1,100 (Johnson Wood); 800 (Cheer Hope)
Current shipments: 150 containers per month.
Facilities: Johnson Wood, 1.4 million-square-foot plant; Cheer Hope, 360,000-square-foot plant (both part of Green River Group).
Future plans: New finish line at Johnson Wood operations in August to increase year-end capacity to 250 containers a month, 350 a year from now; adding 500 workers.

Khai Vy


Ownership: Vietnamese
Established: 2001
Categories: 30% indoor for dining, bedroom and office; 70% outdoor
Workers: 1,500
Current shipments: 140 containers per month
Facilities: 700,000-square-foot plant.
Future plans: Installing a new finishing line for growing its indoor business, with a goal of indoor furniture accounting for 70% of total volume in the future.

Latitude Tree


Ownership: Malaysian
Established: 2002
Categories: bedroom, dining, occasional and wall units
Workers: 1,100
Current shipments: 150 to 200 containers per month
Facilities: 600,000-square-foot plant
Future plans: $10 million, 700,000-square-foot bedroom plant employing 1,500 to open in January 2005.

Minh Duong Co.


Ownership: Vietnamese
Established: 2001
Categories: 70% assembled dining room, 30% ready-to-assemble
Workers: 1,000
Current shipments: 80 containers per month
Facilities: 230,000-square-foot plant
Future plans: Construction of 370,000-square-foot plant by early 2005, 400 additional employees, capacity raised to 120 containers per month.

Return Gold


Ownership: Taiwanese
Established: 1993
Categories: bedroom and components
Workers: 553 (furniture); 850 (components)
Current shipments: 80 containers per month; building to capacity of 120 to 150
Facilities: 200,000-square-foot components plant; 500,000-square-foot plant, built in 2003, is still growing into its capacity, producing 80% bedroom.

San Lim


Ownership: Indonesian
Established: 2003
Categories: bedroom and home office
Workers: 1,200
Current shipments: 100 containers per month
Facilities: 538,000-square-foot plant
Future plans: Completion by early 2005 of expansion to house new finish line, dedicated almost completely to bedroom; adding 500 employees.

Satimex


Ownership: Vietnamese
Established: 1986
Categories: outdoor, and mostly ready-to-assemble bedroom dining and occasional
Workers: 1,600
Current shipments: 100 containers per month
Facilities: 1 million-square-foot plant
Future plans: Expand selection of fully-assembled furniture for approaching the U.S. market.

Theodore Alexander


Established: 1996
Categories: bedroom, dining, occasional, upholstery
Workers: 6,500-plus
Facilities: 1 million-square-foot original plant; began production at 625,000-square-foot Saigon Fine Furniture plant this year.
Future plans: 80,000-square-foot warehouse; 500,000-square-foot addition to Saigon Fine Furniture late 2004 or early 2005.

Tien Trien Vietnam Furniture


Ownership: Vietnamese
Established: 2003

Current shipments: 100 containers per month
Facilities: Building 2.5 million-square-foot plant with three finish lines to start
Future plans: another new plant and as many as five finish lines; employment to increase to 3,000.

Current shipments: 120 containers per month
Facilities: Five plants across Vietnam totaling 1.1 million square feet
Future plans: Considering expansion into indoor furniture in solid U.S. hardwoods at middle and upper price plants; new plant under construction in Dak Lak.

Well Known Furniture


Ownership: Taiwanese
Established: 2001

Workers: 1,500
Current shipments: 120 containers per month
Facilities: 500,000-square-foot plant
Future plans: Second finish line operational in March; original line will be dedicated to bedroom.

Woodworth

Current shipments: 40 to 50 containers per month
Facilities: 500,000-square-foot plant in production four months
Future plans: Building into full capacity; addition of another finish line early next year to create capacity for 400 containers a month.
