Next Gen Day planned for High Point Market

HIGH POINT — Next Generation Now will host a Next Gen Day of educational and networking events on Oct. 21 during the fall High Point Market.

The free event is supported by the North American Home Furnishings Assn., the High Point Market Authority, High Point University and Ashley Furniture Inds., and is focused on broadening the participation and interest of the next generation in the home furnishings industry.

"Next Gen is an important organization to be involved with because it helps the future generation build the tools they need to learn today that will shape this industry tomorrow," said Joey Gunn of Sherman, Texas-based Knight Furniture, a Next Generation Now advisory board member. "We all have similar circumstances and challenges in Next Gen, and it is very valuable to learn and grow together, building a support system from within that will set us all up for success."

Next Gen Day kicks off with a visit to High Point University, where students will interact with industry professionals to discuss opportunities for careers in the home furnishings industry.

Students will be able to ask a panel of manufacturers, service providers and retailers questions about the variety of positions available and help dispel myths about limited options.

Later, Furniture Today Editor-in-Chief Ray Allegrezza will facilitate "3 Guys and a Mic - Insights and Anecdotes with Industry Icons," in which panelists will share stories about how they became involved in the industry and triumphs and challenges along the way, followed by a question and answer session. Participants will include industry analyst Jerry Epperson of Mann, Armistead & Epperson and retailer Pedro Capo of Miami Gardens, Fla.-based El Dorado Furniture.

The day also features additional educational opportunities and job shadowing for HPU students, young professionals and mentors in the industry.

At the NAHFA's Retailer Resource Center at Plaza Suites 20, MicroD is hosting the seminar "Marketing Strategies for Attracting Gen Y," which takes place at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20.

"As the home furnishings' industry association, it is our responsibility to encourage young people to join our industry and provide them with the opportunities to learn and engage with each other," said NAHFA CEO Sharron Bradley. "Close peer relationships have been the foundation of our industry and one of the best ways for our next generation to acquire the knowledge to make them a success. By hosting events such as these, we are supporting our future leaders and the health and success of our industry."
