UTICA, N.Y. — Carl's Furniture City here has settled a dispute with the state of New York, paying a $15,000 fine and agreeing to end deceptive marketing tactics, according to reports.
The retailer, which operates the former Affordable Furniture locations in Utica and Watertown, N.Y., was investigated by the attorney general's office in connection with a "free groceries" promotion and other practices.
Consumers complained the retailer failed to deliver promptly, failed to give refunds for furniture that never arrived, charged restocking fees on cancelled orders and engaged in deceptive "free groceries" promotions and other marketing schemes, according to a report by the Watertown Daily Times.
The company has blamed the problems on a former operator of the stores, Grems.
Carl's Furniture City here is not affiliated with Top 100 company Carls of Coconut Creek, Fla.
