3 saluted for help in fight against pancreatic cancer

Phoenix — Three members of the home furnishings industry were honored for their work in the fight against pancreatic cancer during the Seena Magowitz Golf Luncheon here, an event attended by more than 200 industry members.
Two awards went to the leaders of the pancreatic cancer fund-raising event here: Roger Magowitz, whose mother, Seena, is remembered in the annual event, and Ray Bojanowski, a longtime bedding retailer. Also honored was Furniture/Today bedding editor David Perry.
Magowitz, president of Mattress Discounters of Virginia Beach, Va., and Bojanowski, former president of Metropolitan Mattress of Chandler, Ariz., have worked on the pancreatic cancer campaign for several years. They founded and chair the Seena Magowitz Foundation and recently established the Home Furnishings Fund at the Translational Genomics Research Institute, or TGen, here with a gift of $75,000 from the foundation.
The fund honors those in the industry who have lost their lives to pancreatic cancer, and supports research into the disease, which advocates say is relatively underfunded.
Christine Fleming, vice president of the TGen Foundation, praised Magowitz and Bojanowski. "What an incredible and generous gift you have given," she said. "Not only have you launched the Home Furnishings Fund in honor of the industry's most respected leaders, but you have made it possible for everyone in the home furnishings industry to participate. You both have a real talent for bringing people together, and you have done it again in a meaningful and important way."
Magowitz and Bojanowski were presented with the white lab coats worn by TGen researchers, and also with TGen hats.
Furniture/Today's Perry, who has attended three Seena Magowitz Golf Classics and written stories on the event and the fight against pancreatic cancer, was hailed by Magowitz for "helping bring together the furniture industry in a way that has never been done before in support of a single disease. He has promoted our cause, educated people, and provided publicity and information about pancreatic cancer and about the Seena Magowitz Golf Classic."
Perry also was presented with a TGen lab coat and a trophy commemorating his work.
Dr. Daniel Von Hoff, physician-in-chief and senior investigator at TGen, assisted in the presentation of the awards.
