Hus Furniture making former Hollywoods casual dining line

New company started full production in April

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — Casual dining manufacturer Hus Furniture has begun production of the former Hollywoods Furniture line.

Chris Paulhus, director of operations and owner of Hus Furniture, said he purchased some remaining inventory, customer lists and rights to designs from Hollywoods' owner after it closed on Dec. 31 after about 28 years in business.

Hus started in business on Jan. 6, trying to make a seamless transition for dealers, Paulhus said. It began full production in April at the former Hollywoods factory here and kept most of the former company's workers.

In its heyday, Hollywoods had about $5 million in annual sales and about 600 dealers, Paulhus said. He said he is focused on rebuilding the business and its dealer network and has issued new catalogues, stain lists and fabric samples.

Hus is currently promoting and producing the Hollywood Classics line of original designs Hollywoods had been offering, which Paulhus said were best known by dealers.

The starting price of a five-piece custom dining set is about $2,000, he said.

Hollywoods' specialty was tile-top tables. Paulhus said that in recent years the company added tops in granite and other stone tiles, in addition to plastic laminate inlays or panel inlays with a solid wood border.

Hus is offering 30 fabrics on upholstered chairs in addition to solid wood seat options, tables made from oak and maple, 10 stain colors and a wide selection of laminates.

All tables are available with solid wood or laminate tops, and the line has 25 combinations of table styles and shapes. Paulhus said Hus is one of the few manufacturers still making laminate table tops for dining.

"You can basically create hundreds of different combinations of tops and bases and chairs to come up with different sets and different materials," he said.

The company does not inventory and has about a three week turnaround on customized orders.

Paulhus said he is a former longtime employee of contract producer Helikon Furniture and has more than three decades of industry experience.
